The Building Science Behind Balconies: Library Gardens - A Case Study

A look at how building science can negatively impact elevated exterior element performance. We will look at how the building codes governing balcony design have evolved over the past few codes cycles and the most current codes. We will look at what may be coming over the next few cycles. The presenter was an expert witness on the Library Gardens (Berkeley CA) collapse. This failure claimed the lives of six UC Berkeley students, left another in a wheelchair for life and seriously injured several others. The presentation will include some never before seen forensic photos of the Berkeley Balcony as a way to reinforce the importance of proper balcony construction.
